　　The pair are accompanied by an old friend of John’s, Samuel Parker, played by Marc Warren (Safe, Hustle) who has also left the East India Company and has returned to India for a fresh start. 　　Gregory Fitoussi (Mr Selfridge, Spiral) plays General Castillon, a French mercenary working for the Emperor at a time when the French are challenging the East India Company for India. Castillon is suspicious of John and his motives and conspires to stop John being granted a trading licence.
　　
　　Adil Ray (Citizen Khan, Ackley Bridge) is John’s neighbour Murad Beg who dislikes General Castillon intensely and agrees to help John secure a trading licence. 　　杨的丈夫刘永明多年来一直在房地产管理部门工作，虽然没有什么实权，但时常有人求他找关系通路子，自我感觉很良好。在家里是个甩手大爷，家务事从来不动一手指头。杨红英已经习惯了自己这操心受累的角色，但仍然免不了发两句牢骚。儿子洋洋从小就住在奶奶家，金老太太对孙子十分娇惯，弄得洋洋一身毛病，学习也不努力。
　　丁亚兰的丈夫老李是个好脾气的细心人，对妻子和女儿照顾得无微不至。两家人一起出去玩时，杨红英看得满心羡慕，不由数落自己的丈夫。丁亚兰嘴上夸赞刘永明有本事，心里却觉得自己比杨红英有福气。
　　丁亚兰的女儿李珍十六岁，性格活泼，人长得也漂亮，在学校很惹眼。
　　丁亚兰两口子一直准备买房子，没想到老李要去上海出差时车祸身亡。丁亚兰的生活顿时失去了支撑，杨红英极力宽慰。丁亚兰在整理老李的遗物时发现了老李珍藏着年轻时的女友给他的信，心潮起伏。觉得原本美好的爱情遭到了破坏。
　　理发店的吴姐给丁亚兰介绍了个对象，谁知第一次见面，就被人带到家里，喝酒留宿。丁亚兰酒醒后特别难受，觉得对方是个专门玩弄女性的色鬼，不愿继续交往，并让杨红英代她出面应付。
　　杨红英的夫妻关系一直不冷不热，加上和婆婆的矛盾。家庭关系出现了不少问题。刘永明提升处长后，新来的文秘周玲由于感激刘永明聘用了她，对其分外关心，两个人关系不错。
　　丁亚兰想扩大美发店的规模，增加美容的项目。遇到了年轻设计师季曙光，季曙光提出的种种设计想法都让丁亚兰感到新鲜，甚至激动。丁亚兰对季曙光分外热情，自然流露出种种关切。
　　杨红英工厂不景气，分配她到远郊的一个仓库去工作，杨红英感到有困难。她为了不做家庭妇女，让刘永明看不起，硬着头皮每天赶几小时的路上班。
　　丁亚兰的店开始装修，季曙光经常来监督方案的实施，对工程的质量管得很严。丁亚兰生怕他渴着饿着，处处照顾，甚至还帮他洗弄脏了衣服。季曙光感到很温暖。
　　杨红英每天早出晚归，非常辛苦，刘永明下班回家时家里冷锅冷灶。
　　丁亚兰的美容美发店装修完毕。晚上，漂亮的店堂里只有季曙光一个客人，丁亚兰为他一个人洗头，按摩时两个人都体会到一种情意绵绵的感觉。季曙光情不自禁地向丁亚兰表示了爱慕之情。丁亚兰压抑着自己的感情，未置可否。
　　刘永明告诉杨红英自己给她找了个工作，在一家高级住宅楼"水晶花园"物业管理公司当部门经理，负责管理整个小区的保洁工作。这样杨红英就可以不那么奔波了。
　　杨红英考虑到实际困难，开始在物业公司工作。可是刘永明从此在家里更摆出大爷的谱。一天，刘永明和周玲看电影被金老太太看见。老太太担心儿子有第三者，对杨红英的态度发生了极大的改变，极力撮合他们夫妻关系。刘永明在母亲的授意下，决定通过装修房子来改善夫妻关系。
　　丁亚兰接受了季曙光的感情，两个人开始了甜蜜的同居生活。丁亚兰介绍杨红英找季设计房子，杨无意中发现季和公司的女设计师王小宁态度很亲昵，便提醒季要好好对待丁亚兰，并暗示亚兰受过伤害。季曙光聪明地套出了亚兰上次相亲受害的情况，并以次为借口疏远了和亚兰的关系。
　　亚兰因此迁怒于杨红英，觉得她总是在妨碍自己获得幸福，两个人的关系搞得很僵。
　　刘永明频繁的应酬，往往深更半夜回家，杨红英跟踪发现他和周玲两人去听音乐会.杨实在忍受不了，提出和刘离婚。把洋洋交给刘抚养，物业公司也因此将杨辞退了。
　　杨红英一个人住在刘帮她租的平房，屋子里很简陋。一日做清洁工时遇到了丁亚兰，亚兰看到杨的生活窘境，两人言归于好。
　　刘永明离婚后面对空荡荡的房子心里有些不是滋味。周玲对他表示关心，提出自己可以帮洋洋温习功课。金老太对她阴阳怪气，弄得周玲很下不来台。
　　一日杨红英在菜市场买菜，发现一个老头儿忽然病倒在她身边，热心的杨红英为老头叫来了急救车。急救车必须要求有家属陪同，杨红英情急之中上了车。杨红英和开车的司机赵军成了好朋友，赵军是个热情开朗的人他在很年轻的时候肾功能就出了问题，曾经对生活感到很灰心，但渐渐鼓起勇气，多年的努力之后终于换了肾，至今单身一人。赵军乐观的人生态度让杨红英对他产生了好感。
　　周玲告诉刘永明她要调走了，刘永明感到很突然。原来她在家乡有一个男朋友，现在那个人在南方找了工作，她决定去找他。刘永明感到很失落，周玲在分别之际说出了对刘永明的一些看法，觉得他确实不是一个好丈夫，有大男子主义的倾向，这也是她最终决定离开这里、去找原来的男朋友的潜在原因。刘永明不由受到触动。
　　杨红英邀请赵军到她家里吃饭，把丁亚兰叫来作陪。丁亚兰为杨红英找到男朋友而高兴，但杨红英并不承认赵军是男朋友，只是说自己想和赵师傅学开车。赵军来了，丁亚兰惊讶地发现，赵军竟然是她的小学同学。
　　老同学相见分外亲热，赵军和丁亚兰聊得热火朝天，回忆童年的趣事，欢笑不止。在厨房准备饭菜的杨红英听着屋里一阵阵的说笑声，心中若有所失。一段时间的接触，杨红英和丁亚兰都对赵军感觉不错，两个好朋友再次陷入一种微妙的情绪中……
